چکیده

Introduction: Hyperpolarized (HP) noble gas MRI and MRS in the lungs on spontaneous breathing mice is expected as a valuable modality for drug discovery or development of the methods for evaluating physiological changes. Since the measurements under the spontaneous breathing condition are fully non-invasive protocol without using mechanical ventilation, this technique allows a long-term and the repeated measurements on the same individual. To evaluate pulmonary structures and functions comprehensively in diseased lungs is extremely important and that would be needed to measure at a nature respiratory state. In this work, we tried to detect changes of several important lung properties in a mouse model of emphysema by using HP Xe MRI and MRS under the spontaneous breathing condition. Here the septal thickness and the volume ratio of the septum to the air space as pulmonary structures and ventilation, gas-exchange, and perfusion as pulmonary functions were evaluated in the same individual.

Detection of Parameters Related to Lung Functions and Structures as Applied to Emphysema Model Mice with Hyperpolarized Xe MRS Observed under Spontaneous Respiration

Introduction: Recent significant progress in hyperpolarized (HP) noble gas MRI has made it possible to exploit a novel method of evaluating lung function or structure and to have a deep understanding of lung physiological changes. Xe has inherent features of high solubility in lung tissues and large chemical shift distribution. It has been shown that measurement of recovery process of dissolved...

Lung MRI with trueFISP on Spontaneous Breathing Mice by Means of Continuous Delivery of Xe Gas Polarized under Low Pressure

Introduction: The hyperpolarized (HP) noble gas MRI on mice is expected as an extremely valuable modality in studies of drug discovery because of the easy access to genetically engineered species as well as various disease models. In these studies, a non-invasive protocol that allows a long-term and repeated measurements on the same individual may be required, which will be realized by the use ...

3D Hyperpolarized (129)Xe MRI of mouse lung at low xenon concentration using a continuous flow-type hyperpolarizing system: feasibility for quantitative measurement of regional ventilation.

PURPOSE We investigated the feasibility of 3D hyperpolarized (HP) (129)Xe magnetic resonance (MR) imaging at an extremely low concentration of HP (129)Xe supplied from a continuous flow-type hyperpolarizing (CF-HP) system and established a standard procedure for measuring regional lung ventilation of small animals, such as the mouse, as a baseline for further studies. MATERIALS AND METHODS We...

Comparison of 3 He and 129 Xe MRI for evaluation of lung microstructure and ventilation at 1.5T.

BACKGROUND To support translational lung MRI research with hyperpolarized 129 Xe gas, comprehensive evaluation of derived quantitative lung function measures against established measures from 3 He MRI is required. Few comparative studies have been performed to date, only at 3T, and multisession repeatability of 129 Xe functional metrics have not been reported. PURPOSE/HYPOTHESIS To compare hy...

Hyperpolarized Gas MRI of the Lungs

The hyperpolarized gases 3 He and 129 Xe are prepared with a magnetization that is 100,000-fold larger than what could be attained by simple thermal equilibrium. This extraordinary magnetization overcomes the low density of these gases and permits them to be imaged with high spatial and temporal resolution. The principles of gas hyperpolarization have been reviewed in a very accessible manner b...
